Mission Field

A church's immediate mission field is usually the community around the church. Since More Than 12 views the church as its people, and our people are from throughout Metro Vancouver, we are a metropolitan church rather than neighbourhood church and our immediate mission field is the communities of the people that make up the church plant. But what do we mean by the word "community?"  Traditionally, community has been defined as the neighbourhood around you, and expressed through relationships between neighbours. In the Bible when God commanded His people to love their neighbours, the intent was for the people to love those they associate with on a day to day basis. Because people in Biblical times had geographically narrow social networks, they could only feasibly associate daily with people in their immediate neighbourhood within their village, town, or city, hence the command to "love your neighbour as yourself."

With modern day realities of urban living in Metro Vancouver, we see ourselves and our target group expecting to interact with their local community, and also commute and interact remotely for many things in their lives. This means where they live is commonly not where they work, play, learn, shop, worship, or even rest. This concept may be referred to as relational communities, which we see as a tremendous opportunity for the spread of the Gospel, and a new missional opportunity for our people. Our people are involved on a daily basis in a broader urban environment which includes, but also spans beyond their immediate geographical neighbourhoods. They can gain information and interact through varying ways shown here:

  • Local Media - newspapers, television
  • Transportation - automobiles, Skytrains, airplanes
  • Telephony - telephones, cell phones, cheap long distance calling, conference calling, text messaging
  • Internet Technologies - instant messaging, video conferencing, web cams, blogs, blog commenting, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Skype, GoogleDocs, Twitter
    ...and more.

Furthermore, because we define church as more than a building, we do not even own a building, which means More Than 12's mission field simply cannot be limited to the geographical location of a building where the people, who are throughout Metro Vancouver, gather for a corporate worship event a few times a month. Therefore, while neighbourhood is a definite component of community, we believe it can include a broader expression than just the immediate geography. For us our mission field also includes those other forms of community, which are the various multi-faceted relational communities of our people.
